“We are spinning a story based on fact but embracing fiction”. Sally Mann, Family Frames, 1997
Most people born into a western culture are placed into a narrative as soon as they are born, mainly in the form of photographs and albums. The photographs and albums become a way of recounting and validating their history.
But this history is subjective. The camera only records what ever is in front of the lens when the shutter is released by the photographer. Then the photographer chooses which of the resulting photographs to display. Therefore they have total control over how they are represented.
This body of work is a personal self reflection using images from my family albums that span back 100 years. It is an examination of the medium of photography and how photographs captivate us. They pull us in and leave us wanting more. The collection of photographs displayed offer glimpses into my past and gives a sense of my family background and yet, tells you nothing concrete, only whispers of the truth.
